Update

I have not posted anything in a long time, which is not unusual for me, but still... I am working at a "temp" job that I have had since mid-August; as an admin in an IT department. It isn't interesting working in the corporate world, and I would like to go back to academia or the non-profit world very soon. I am still looking for the elusive library job, plugging away writing cover letters and sending out resumes. Yeah, that pretty much sums up what I have been doing for the past few months. Now I have to go write two cover letters and try to convince myself that I would make a good Teen Librarian.

Laptop whoas

First a story: Yesterday when I got home from work and went to go check the internet for email and news, my computer screen would not wake up, I closed my laptop to put it back to sleep, a tick that usually works, and the computer would not go into sleep mode, the light on the side did not pulse. I opened it back up, still no screen, the fan was whirring so I knew it was on. I push the power button to force quit it and nothing changed. Next I took more desperate steps and unplugged it and removed the battery, it shut off (I would be scared if it had not). I left out the battery for a minute or so, put everything back in, and push the power button. Nothing happened. I started to panic, and handed the laptop to my husband. He fiddled with it, to no avail. We tried letting it cool down, nothing. We tried resetting the power system, nothing. Then the screwdrivers came out. To see if there was anything noticeably out of place. There was. The connection between the power button and the mother board had come part.

Now a question: What do I do? Is it fixable, if so how, or where. If not I guess I am getting a new laptop for my birthday.

Unemployed Librarian

For the few of you who read this lets review: I have a Masters in library science, I have a BA in history. I have been looking at for a job in my field for almost two years. I have lost count of the number of job I have applied to. So here I sit, on a cool July day and contemplating what I should do next. Outside the library world what am a qualified to do? How do I get noticed, I feel like on paper I am not the same person I am in reality. I do not want to move, but under what circumstances should it be put on the table. How do I not let two years of rejection change me in a negative way? I am really a snob? How long can I work making sandwiches for less money they I have made since high school? Where do I go from here??

Fire!!

So last night at work (Not school, the other job), I was waiting on a customer when I smelled something burning, which is not that odd, but I looked around and nothing was cooking and the burners were not on. Then I looked behind me, to the food warmer. One of the paper bags full of food was ON FIRE!!!!! Well to be honest at this point it was smoldering but as soon as I picked it up it was ON FIRE, so I thinking quickly dumped it to the water for the pasta, and put it out. Apparently they were not kidding when they said not to put the bags to close to the light. Well that was one way to make a long week exciting.

A Child's Christmas in Space

This is my favorite little skit from MST3K from Santa Conquors the Martians.

Tom Servo:A Childs Chirstmas in Space- It's quiet in the cold of our own little orbit, starless and Bible black. And as I look down on the big blue bead we would call home, I think it's so near, yet... Oh, I wish on that star and I hope that in a little snow-covered house with a warm hearth and a loving family, maybe some kid is looking up tonight and wishing upon us. Oh, and how I hope sweet Santa will fly by tonight because if he does I'm gonna reach right out and hug that big guy. Oh, for the sound of hooves against the steel hull of the ship. Oh, to see the rosy face of Santa in the portal offering me a Coke and a smile. [starts to lose it] Of course, his face *would* be rosy because its a vacuum out there! I mean, Santa's heart would explode! But he wouldn't feel it because the capillaries in his brain would pop like little firecrackers due to the blood boiling away in his face like a pudding in a copper--OH THE HUMANITY! And his jolly old belly would start bubbling like a roasted marshmallow, eyes bulging and popping out... AND THE REINDEER! OH, THE REINDEER keep floating like holiday floats, in their turn exploding like a hail of blood and entrails! Prancer...BOOM! Dancer...BOOM! ...

I could have them evicted from their offices- no, really.*

So here is the background: At the beginning of October I applied for a job with Librarything, and got an interview. The interview went very well and at the end of it we left off that they still had more interviews, but I sounded like a good fit for the job and in a week or two the person I interviewed with would be back up here (in P-town, from Boston) and he would like to meet the candidates in person before making any final decisions (it was a phone interview). Two weeks later having heard nothing I sent them an email to see what was up. I heard nothing. Two weeks after that I sent another email to see what the status of the position is and to let them know that I was still interested. I heard nothing.

So the question here is: it has now been six weeks since the interview, and I have heard nothing, what do I do? It is the best job lead I have had in the year of applying for jobs and as far as their site is concerned, they have not hired new employees, Please, does any one have any ideas?

*I found in the smallness of the this city that I know the woman who owns the building there offices are in, and where the guy I interview with family lives. She and her brother grew up a few houses down from my mother and all her siblings. Her bother has suggested that if they do not hire me, his sister was very ammemable to raising the rent or what ever. I was that or egg their house on halloween. (:

Today I finally got my Drivers License. Things I learned: it is easier to do it when you are over the age of 21, I should not have passed my test but I did, and you can get a license never having driven at night or in any weather that is not sun.

Also, on the job front I am no longer board out of my mind I am working not in a library but I am back subbing school started last week, also I am working evenings at a local sandwich shop, Yay money!

Diploma

Yesterday, I received my diploma (which was not suppose to come until like March). I am now all official, of course it does not seem that way, Being that got it when my mother handed it to me in the back of the car, and then it took me like 15 min to figure out how to get the tube open. But the University of Maryland has in fact officially granted me the degree of Master of Library of Science.

Go Me!

Now I just have to get a frame to put it in, right now the tube is displayed prominently on my kitchen table.

Settling in

We are finally in our new apartment, well we got in on Saturday, but today we got internet and it is starting to feel like it is coming together (meaning all 10 boxes of books are unpacked). The new apartment is nice, it is half of the first floor of a large Victorian house. It has lots of nice details, but is set up really funny. I will post some picture, once we get rid of all of the boxes and such. I am going to send out an email with my new contact information, if you do not get one by the end of the week and want our new address just respond and I will add you to the list.

Done

So last night around 8pm, I finished Library Grad School. I am done. I have a little over a week until graduation. And then I move back home, and get a Real job. But I all but officially have my Masters in Library Science. It is odd, maybe Graduation will hit me, but it does not feel like I am done. I have only been here three semesters, that is not enough time to finish anything. But I am.

Utilities

So I moved in June, and as part of the deal since I was in Maine and [info]driftingsoul was dealing with all the moving stuff down here, was that I would take care of transferring the utilities. Power, gas, cable, this seems like a simple task.
So today, yes it is now September, I have had to deal with to of them.
Gas- In July I was informed by the owners of the Apartment complex that the gas had not been transfered into our name, easy fix, call them, they retroactively transfer services and then send us a new bill. A little hassle but clear up quickly.
Cable- WELL Comcast is evil seems to sum this up, after taking over a month to get up service, I get the first bill and they have charged us for the month. I call and they say they will change the bill, I get my next bill and they have give us back a little of the money, and so though it is more then tree times more then my regular bill I pay it.
Power- The one that until about a week ago I thought was the good utility, we has received a bill, it looked right. Yay! Then I realized that we had never received our bill for August, and my online account had not been updated either, so today I decided to Call, and see what was up. They to had never switch service over to our new apartment, an now it has been two months and they have no record of my request for service change, I have to go to one of there offices in person. I do not have a car. This means I have to take a day go into DC, with my lease and a photo ID, and figure this out.
I cant wait to get back to maine were all the Utilities are local.

Moving?

So Yesterday, we received a phone called from SM, saying that ours is the next building to be renovated, which means we have to move or live for the next few months with workers coming in and out, having the power and water turned off without notice. To make matters even more fun, this all has to happen in the next 30 days. Well I am still in Maine, which means that [info]driftingsoul has to moving all our stuff. Sigh. The next month is not going to be fun.

Packing for home

So, I am finishing up packing to head home very early tomorrow morning, for my wedding which is in 5 days. I have been oddly calm for the most part for about three weeks, I got 75 pages of papers done, a 40 min presentation, and did I mention my wedding is in 5 days. I feel like I must be forgetting something big. I can not be this easy, to take four grad classes and plan a wedding. I am suppose to be bridezilla, or at least on the edge of a nervous break down. We will see how at am when I get up at 5am.

Drowning in Paper

I know that only a handful of people read this journal and many of you are very busy right now but I have a favor to ask. If any one feels up to I would love to have some look over one of the papers I am writing, [info]driftingsoul my faithful editor is looking over them all but it amounts to more then 60 pages and two or more eyes is better then one. By the way the paper are: 20(current 15 but done) pages on The 1954 Hague Convention to Protect Cultural Property in Times of Armed Conflict (This is a policy paper), 30 (current 14, still in progress) Pages on A Comparative View of archival practices in Film archives, 10 ( not started yet) on Access to Film in Mixed Archival Collections.

Long Lost Bridesmaid

Dear [info]spawnsatsix,
I have been working on Wedding plans during my break from classes, and you seem to be my loose end. I want to ask you what you wanted to wear? To fill you in on what every one else is going to look like and to give you some options. The other men in the wedding party are wearing black utilikilts (http://www.utilikilts.com/), suit coats and shirts with silver ties (I think). The best man who is female, is also wearing a kilt but a female one she is picking up while she is scotland. The other bridesmaids, are wearing sliver tops and matching long skirts (See picture below). So you can be the same as the other guys or like megan you can find something similar to what the others are wearing but your own. I hope to here back from you soon.
Me

P.S. We still do not have your mailing address for your invitation, we are sending it to RWU right.

P.P.S When are you on spring break, and are you coming to P-town during it?

I'm DONE

I am done, I have survived my first semester of Grad School with four classes. I can finally go back to not fearing Wednesday, after three of the most stressful ones ever. On the 6th I had a paper and a presentation which together made up 50% of my grade for one of my classes. On the 13th, I had another presentation and a final due. Then today, I had a final, a paper, and a presentation, a whopping 75% of my grade was due today on the LAST day that anything can be due. But now I am done and I can pack, and wrap presents, and watch Torchwood.

My Name is....

I must look like a Mary, have some facial characteristic that screams Mary, is it some how encoded on my DNA.
Ok so here is the story.
I work at the university archives, I have been working there for about a month now (by work, I mean that they do not pay me but that it is forced labor for class) So today I stayed late because there was a high school group coming to tour the archive and we had to talk about what we were doing and how we got started in archives. So the archivist introduces me to the group as MARY.
Mary. I thought that I had escaped, these people have never met my mother or my sister. They have never noted the family resemblance. How did she get the name on the top of the list of other names I respond to, the others by the way are Katherine, Frances and Veronica.
